I was having one of those discussion with a marketing friend today and we were having that debate about sex selling everything you can imagine. I wasn’t so sure, I mean there’s no doubt that there are some products sex just couldn’t sell, but I was soon shown how limited the list actually was.
It was a great game where I would suggest some product or service, and he’d tell me how he’d use sex to sell it. I kicked off with a doozy – Funeral services. Yeah, I thought I had him right there, and he actually came up with a really great comedy ad (that probably wouldn’t go down too well) of the service, and a guys brother talking about how “he died doing someone he loved” before correcting himself and saying “SOMETHING! Something he loved!”
Okay, so my buddy won that one. And almost every suggestion I came up with after was quickly sold using sex too.
But, although there are some clever ways my buddy would market something using sex, the guys who put these pics together for a campaign decided that they didn’t really need a message, they just needed some hot muscled Rugby players to appear in some black and white photos with the product, which happens to be sandwiches!
Yep, I think it’s obvious that they’re ripping it out of the Dieux du Stade Calendar guys. But it’s funny for those of us who get it. I don’t think the majority of people would quite understand it though! lol
